Food-Contact Recyclates
Food-contact recyclate is assessed for safety under EU (EFSA) or US (FDA) rules. Recycled PET is the most established food-grade recyclate.
What it means
Plastic that touches food must meet safety requirements covering the input stream, the recycling process and migration limits. In the EU this is assessed by EFSA; in the US by the FDA. A grade is suitable only for the applications its assessment covers.
Where it applies
Recycled PET is by far the most established food-contact recyclate, used in bottle-to-bottle and tray applications. Food-grade qualities require controlled input streams (typically bottle PCR) and validated decontamination.
