Saving valuable resources: Recyclates and their importance for the circular economy

The circular economy is an important aspect of a sustainable economy. Recycled pellets help to save valuable resources and reduce CO2 emissions. Here you can learn more about the importance of recyclates for a sustainable economy and how Sinox Polymers can accompany you on your way there.

What is recyclate?

Recyclates are recycled plastics that have been disposed of by private households or companies and can be used to make new products. The products from which recyclates are obtained have therefore already completed a life cycle and are processed into new products. The reuse reduces the use of raw materials and the associated increased energy demand.

What are the different types of recycled plastics?

Recyclate is the generic term for different types of recycled plastics. Regrind is obtained by crushing plastics, while agglomerate is obtained by crushing and partial plasticisation and consists of parts that stick together. Regranulate is obtained by a melting process from recyclable plastics without additives and has a uniform particle size.

How is recyclate produced?

The production of recyclates begins with the collection and sorting of plastic waste. These are then shredded and washed to remove impurities and foreign matter. The cleaned plastic is then crushed into small granules or flakes. Depending on the type of recyclate, it may additionally undergo a melting process for further processing.

For plastic regrind the plastics are fed into a shredder, which grinds them into small, uniform particles. The size of the regrind particles depends on the intended application and can be adjusted using various screen sizes in the grinding equipment.

For the production of regranulate, the shredded plastics are melted and processed into new granulate. In this process, the plastic is melted at high temperatures, freed from impurities and shaped into the desired form. The regranulate can then be used as a raw material in various applications, thus saving valuable resources and reducing waste.

Agglomerate undergoes a similar procedure for collecting as other pellets. The cleaned plastic waste is fed into an agglomerator or densifier, which uses a combination of heat and mechanical forces to compress the low-density plastic materials. The friction generated by the rotating blades inside the agglomerator softens the plastic, and the continuous agitation causes the softened materials to stick together, forming larger and denser particles called agglomerates. After the agglomeration process, the hot, dense agglomerates are cooled, typically using a water spray system or by passing them through a cooling chamber. This step solidifies the agglomerates, preventing them from sticking together or deforming.

Areas of application for recycled plastic

There are many different types of recyclates that can be used depending on the area of application. For example, regrind is often used in the production of injection moulded products or pipes, while agglomerate is often used in the production of pallets or in injection moulding. Regranulate, on the other hand, is particularly versatile and is used in many different applications, such as the production of bottles or containers.

The importance of recycled plastic for a sustainable economy

The production of recyclates is a costly process, but one that can be made efficient and environmentally friendly with modern technologies. Sinox Polymers is committed to the sustainable and environmentally friendly production of recyclates and offers high-quality products in various designs.
