Eco-friendliness in business: how recycled polypropylene helps companies become more sustainable

Recycled polypropylene (r-PP) is a viable alternative to virgin polypropylene (PP) that is relevant to B2B customers in a variety of industries. By manufacturing products from recycled polypropylene, companies can offer a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional plastic products. Particularly for companies that produce large amounts of plastic waste, recycled PP material offers a way to put this waste to good use while reducing their environmental impact. With an increasing demand for environmentally friendly products in many industries, recycled PP is becoming more and more relevant for B2B customers.

Recycled polypropylene in focus: What you should know about it

Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic plastic similar to HDPE in terms of its properties and structure. Due to its properties such as low density, high strength and resistance to chemical substances, PP plastic is widely used in various industries such as the automotive industry, the packaging industry and the construction industry. Typical applications for PP include packaging for food, medicines or cosmetics, car parts such as bumpers or dashboards, and pipes and films.

Recycled polypropylene is produced by processing used polypropylene. In the process, the plastic waste is first sorted, cleaned and shredded before being processed into regranulate. R-PP has similar properties to virgin PP material, but is much more environmentally friendly as it helps to reduce plastic waste and requires fewer resources and energy to produce.

Cost-effective sustainability: The benefits of PP recyclate for B2B customers

PP recyclate offers B2B customers a wide range of benefits. It enables savings on material costs, as r-PP is often more cost-effective than virgin polypropylene. In addition, companies that manufacture or use products made from recycled polypropylene can achieve their sustainability goals and strengthen their image as an environmentally conscious company. R-PP is also an environmentally friendly option for customers who prefer sustainable products and want to contribute to protecting the environment. According to a 2020 study by the Association of Plastic Recyclers, recycled PP is a more environmentally friendly alternative to virgin raw materials, as CO2 emissions are up to 70% lower than virgin pellets.

All-rounder polypropylene: How PP recyclate is used in different sectors

Recycled polypropylene is an attractive choice in many industries and applications due to its sustainability and cost-effectiveness. In the packaging industry, it is often used for food and beverage packaging because it is stable and can be certified for food contact. In the automotive industry, it is used to make car parts such as bumpers, dashboards and hubcaps. In the construction industry, PP recyclate can also be used in the manufacture of pipes, cable ducts and insulation.

Other examples of applications for recycled polypropylene in the B2B sector include interior trim and child seats. Interior trim in vehicles is often made of polypropylene because it is lightweight, strong and resistant to high temperatures and chemicals. Here, r-PP offers a more environmentally friendly alternative to virgin PP. r-PP material can also be used in child seats, as it is safe and robust. In addition, it is able to meet the legal requirements regarding the reduction of harmful substances.

Recycled polypropylene offers companies the opportunity to demonstrate an environmentally conscious attitude and to make their contribution to reducing waste and emissions. By using recycled PP regrind and regranulate, B2B customers can not only save costs, but also achieve their sustainability goals and strengthen their image as a responsible company.

No compromise on quality: standards and certificates for r-PP

To ensure the quality of PP recyclate, there are various certifications. The PP we offer meets the highest quality standards and is optionally approved by the Food and Drug Administration FDA and certified according to Global Recycled Standard GRS as well as Ocean Bound Plastic OBP.

Food-safe PCR r-PP regranulate

Our food-safe r-PP regranulate is approved by the American FDA for use in products that come into contact with food. It can therefore serve as a replacement for new PP plastic in many applications.

It is made from high-quality Post-Consumer Recycling PCR cups that are recycled in a bespoke manufacturing process to ensure the best quality and consistent performance.

In order to ensure food safety, the input material consists exclusively of food-safe waste plastics and the recycling plant is FDA-certified.

The FDA has no objection to the use of up to 100% recycled content in the manufacture of items under FDA Conditions of Use (COU) E through G.

In addition, the r-PP regranulate is Global Recycled Standard GRS certified. This ensures from source to product that it is actually PCR r-PP.

In addition, the GRS certification ensures that recycling is carried out under high environmental protection and occupational safety standards.

The FDA proposes the following conditions of use

  1. Articles (e.g., monolayer trays, containers, boxes, and clam shells) intended for contact with raw fruits, vegetables, and shell eggs under Conditions of Use (COU) E through G.
  2. Items (e.g. containers) intended for use with dry dietary supplements, retail carrier bags (grocery bags) and secondary and tertiary packaging films intended for use with all food types under COU E to G.
  3. Non-food contact layer in multi-layer packaging intended for use with all types of food under all COU provided that the PCR-PP is separated from the food by an effective barrier.

This food-safe plastic recyclate complies with the following regulations

  • LNO obtained by US FDA
  • EU REACH Regulation (EC) No. 197/2006 Article 33 (1) (SVHCs)
  • RoHS Annex II of 2011/65/EU and amendment (EU) 2015/863 (heavy metals)
  • EN71-3:2019
