Sustainability in focus - Why HDPE recycling is the future

For businesses, using recycled HDPE is a great way to achieve their sustainability goals and reduce their environmental footprint. By using recycled HDPE plastic instead of virgin HDPE, companies can conserve resources, reduce waste and lower their production costs. In addition, there is a growing demand from consumers and government agencies for more environmentally friendly products. By using HDPE regranulate and regrind, companies can present themselves as part of the circular economy and achieve their sustainability goals.

HDPE - A flexible and durable plastic

HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) is a thermoplastic used in many applications due to its high density, strength and rigidity. HDPE is made by polymerising ethylene and is typically opaque and resistant to many chemicals and moisture. HDPE has excellent tear strength and is also UV resistant, making it a suitable choice for outdoor products. Applications for HDPE include packaging, containers, pipes, toys and (outdoor) furniture. Due to its versatile properties and its ability to be reused as a recycled material, HDPE pellets and regrind are an important cornerstone for companies in the plastics industry, also in achieving environmental goals.

Cheaper, more environmentally friendly and certified - The advantages of HDPE recyclate

There are several benefits of using HDPE recyclate, including cost savings compared to virgin material. According to a 2020 study by the Association of Plastic Recyclers, recycled HDPE is also considered a more environmentally friendly alternative to virgin raw materials, with CO2 emissions up to 70% lower than virgin pellets. There are also quality standards and certifications to ensure that the material meets industry requirements and standards.

Food grade HDPE regranulate

Our food grade HDPE regranulate is approved for use in food contact products by the US Food and Drug Administration FDA. It can therefore be used as a substitute for new HDPE plastic in many applications.

It is manufactured from high quality containers from the post-consumer recycling PCR, which are recycled in a customised converting process to ensure best quality and consistent performance.

In order to guarantee food safety, the input material consists exclusively of food-safe recycled plastics, and the recycling plant is certified by the FDA. The FDA has no objection to the use of up to 100% recycled content in the manufacture of articles under FDA Conditions of Use (COU) E to G.

More information about the FDA and its quality standards can be found on our certificate info pages.

In addition to our food-grade HDPE, we also have other qualities with different certifications, such as Global Recycled Standard GRS. This ensures that it is really PCR HDPE, from the source to the product.

GRS certification also ensures that recycling is carried out under high environmental and occupational health and safety standards.

The FDA proposes the following conditions of use

  1. Items (e.g., single-ply trays, containers, boxes, and clam shells) intended for contact with raw fruits, vegetables, and shell eggs under Conditions of Use (COU) E through G.
  2. Items (e.g. containers) intended for use with dry dietary supplements, retail carrier (grocery) bags, and secondary and tertiary packaging films intended for use with all food types under COU E through G.
  3. Non-food contact layer in multi-layer packaging intended for use with all types of food under all COU provided that the PCR-HDPE is separated from the food by an effective barrier.

This food-safe plastic recyclate complies with the following regulations

  • LNO obtained by US FDA
  • EU REACH Regulation (EC) No. 197/2006 Article 33 (1) (SVHCs)
  • RoHS Annex II of 2011/65/EU and amendment (EU) 2015/863 (heavy metals)
  • EN71-3:2019

Diverse applications - How HDPE recyclate promotes the circular economy

HDPE plastic is used in a variety of applications, including packaging, pipes and fittings, toys and furniture. In packaging, HDPE granules are commonly used for food packaging, shampoo bottles and plastic bags. For pipes and fittings, it is used in the manufacture of drinking water and sewage pipes and in agriculture. Toy manufacturers use HDPE recyclate to make building blocks, figurines and other toys. In the furniture sector, it is used in the production of garden furniture, dustbins and other outdoor items.

Innovative and sustainable - the future of HDPE recyclate in the plastics industry

The use of HDPE recyclate is expected to increase in the future as companies strive to meet their sustainability goals and reduce the use of virgin material. However, one challenge is the availability of sufficient quantities of high quality HDPE recyclate, especially in countries with limited recycling infrastructures. Therefore, it will be important to continue investing in the development and expansion of recycling and collection systems to meet the demand for high quality HDPE recyclate in the industry.
